Phase 2 A'dam Thu 4 March 2027

Trend & Concept module

To design distinctive, future-proof interiors, you need to be able to work from a concept and stay up to date with current and future trends, whether you're a designer or a stylist. Through an extensive trend and concept assignment, you'll learn to spot trends and apply them within a concept. In your own trend research, you'll analyse trend information and turn it into a concept with its own colours, shapes, patterns and materials.

Start Your Business module

Many NIA students set up their own business after the course. In this module, you'll get a taste of running a business and use an "entrepreneur's journal" to explore your own core values and preferences. You'll also learn the key practical steps for starting out, such as registering with the Chamber of Commerce, setting your hourly rate, building your visual brand and using social media. In a classroom exercise, you'll also learn which questions to ask in a good initial consultation, which is the foundation of all interior design advice.

Phase 2 A'dam Thu 4 March 2027

Interior Design module

You'll build on the design skills you learned in Phase 1 through a practical interior design and styling assignment, in which you create a sustainable design from a concept using second-hand items. In Phase 2, you'll go through the whole design process, from programme of requirements (design brief) to final design. Along the way, you'll learn more about bathroom and kitchen design and how to use colour, materials and lighting. This module also takes you from 2D drawing to 3D drawing.

Interior Styling module

In the Interior Styling module, you'll work on the same assignment as in the Interior Design module, but from a stylist's point of view. You'll turn the concept into a balanced, abstract moodboard, then make concrete choices of colour, shape and material for furniture and accessories, taking trends into account. This takes all the skills you gained in Phase 1 and the earlier modules even further!

Final presentation & choice

On the last day of Phase 2, you'll present the joint interior design and styling final assignment to your class and tutor, and bring your portfolio along too. It's an exciting moment: by now you should have a good picture of both design and styling, and you'll have discovered where your preferences and strengths lie. As well as presenting your work, you'll choose your specialism: Interior Design or Interior Styling (Phase 3 of the programme).

What will you learn?

In Phase 2, you'll grow as a designer/stylist, with deeper knowledge of interior design, interior styling, starting your own business, trend watching and conceptual thinking. You'll produce a complete, sustainable interior proposal based on a concept, applying relevant trends. By the end of the second phase, you'll be ready to choose your Phase 3 specialism, Interior Design or Interior Styling, based on your portfolio, your preferences and your strengths.

What can you do after the advanced phase?

By the end of this phase, you'll be able to:

  • spot trends and apply them based on in-depth trend analysis
  • work and think from a concept
  • apply trends within a concept
  • visualise a concept in a balanced, abstract mood board and turn it into a concrete colour, materials, furniture and lighting plan
  • produce a complete interior proposal, from programme of requirements to final design
  • create a 3D drawing of an interior
  • work through the different stages of the design process
  • make sustainable choices and apply them in an interior proposal
  • make a well-considered start to your own business
  • hold an in-depth initial consultation with a client
  • present a complete concept
  • reflect on your own development and preferences
  • choose your specialism: Interior Design or Interior Styling
